Baby’s fine hair – how to look after it?
It is very important to take good care of your child’s hair, as its care needs to be different from an adult. The products you use every day are not suitable for a baby’s hair, as the baby’s scalp is much more sensitive than that of an adult. Choose gentle shampoos and conditioners with a neutral PH. It’s good for the shampoo to be hypoallergenic (as it won’t damage the cuticle) and have softening and detangling properties. If you, as a mum, also want to look perfect, bet on hair weave.
Newborn baby’s hair
A newborn baby’s hair is called moustache, and its length is usually no more than one or two centimeters. It is very soft, fluffy, and delicate. It stays on the baby’s head only for a few months, and then it disappears. The baby spends most of the time lying down and rubs his head against the sheet or blanket, so the fuzz simply rubs off. This is a normal physiological process. Hair follicles do not have sebaceous glands, which lubricate the hair, and therefore specialists do not recommend washing the head every day so as not to dry out the baby’s scalp. Hair starts to grow when the child spends more time in a sitting position.
When should a baby get a haircut?
Cutting the hair of small children is a very individual matter and depends on the parents’ attitude and decision. Short hair is easier to care for and more comfortable for the child during everyday play. However, it is a myth that shaving a baby’s head is the way to beautiful hair and speeds up hair growth. Cutting hair can be a very stressful experience for some babies, so it is important to have the right atmosphere and attitude from the caregivers and hairdresser during this procedure.
How to care for a baby’s hair?
The care of a baby’s hair is very important in the early stages of its life. So how do you care for your baby’s hair? Here are a few tips:
- Wash your baby’s hair with unscented soap or gentle baby bath liquid and water. Shampoo is not yet needed for your baby’s first hair; buy it only when your baby is six months old.
- Do not wash your baby’s hair every day – do it every few days.
- Do not use a hairdryer – gently wipe the hair and wait for it to dry on its own.
- Only brush your baby’s hair with soft, natural bristles; a comb can irritate the skin.
- Brush wet hair from the ends and not from the crown of the head.
- Do not use shampoo designed for adults!
- If your child has allergies, only use products that are recommended by pediatricians, dermatologists, or midwives.
How to comb out your child’s tangles
Your baby’s scalp is very delicate, and every tug of the hair can cause pain. Brushing the baby’s hair requires patience, both on the baby and the parent, so it is better to prevent tangles. Tangles in toddlers’ hair are a nightmare for most parents. One way to make your toddler’s hair easier to comb is to use a leave-in conditioner. This will make the hair more slippery, making it easier to comb out the hair’s tangles. To prevent tangles – use your hands to gently detangle your baby’s hair while washing it. You can also detangle them while washing them after applying conditioner (before rinsing it out).
Children’s curly hair
Curly hair in children requires special treatment. If your child has curly hair, wash it very gently without tugging. Do not forget to condition the hair. Curly hair is dry by nature. Comb through with a wide-toothed comb, preferably while the hair is still wet before rinsing out the conditioner. If your child has curly hair, you should use suitable products for curly hair. Most shampoos and conditioners for curly hair are not suitable for children. Pay attention to their ingredients – they should not contain SLS or SLES, parabens, or artificial colorings.
If your child’s hair falls out – do not ignore it. Consult a specialist. Depending on the symptoms, the doctor may order a blood test or refer the child to a dermatologist or another doctor.
